Mosquito Season: Protecting Your Child and Soothing the Bites

Lately we have seen children at school with terrible, itchy welts from mosquito bites that they can't stop scratching. Mosquitoes are a nuisance and an annoyance, and they can be a health hazard. Here is what helps.

Preventing bites

  • Dress your child in light colors, long sleeves and long pants.

  • Place an oscillating fan outside. Mosquitoes are weak flyers, and a fan keeps them away.

  • Empty standing water around your home, such as buckets, planters, pet bowls and toys.

  • Ask your pediatrician which repellent is right for your child's age.

Relieving itch and swelling

  • Wrap an ice pack in a towel and hold it on the bite for 10 minutes.

  • Apply calamine lotion, hydrocortisone cream or a baking soda paste. Ask your doctor before using hydrocortisone on a child under 2.

  • If the reaction is worse, there are other options. Ask your doctor.
